Ember Media Manager (aka EMM or Ember) is an open source movie and TV Show collections management tool which initially has been created to use with XBMC, but it should virtually support most of the other media center application out there. It empowers home theater enthusiasts to manage and organize their entire movie and TV Show collections. EMM will scrape (retrieve) movie and TV Show information (plot, cast, genre, studio, mpaa certification, etc) from various sites, together with posters, fanarts, actor photos and even movie trailers. It also automatically extracts media metadata like resolution, codecs, audio and subtitle streams. EMM can also be used as a standalone movie organizer/ cataloguer, but the primary aim of such a tool is to export all the data and images to a format, which you can then import into your favorite media center application. In order to achieve this, EMM stores all data and images in files which saved next to the media files. Media center applications can pick up those files and import the information to their own internal database.

Media Center Applications are usually have their own built-in scraping tools, however they are quite slow and if you need to reinstate your media library for any reason, you will have to re-scrape and manually fine tune all your media information from scratch again.

The advantages over the built-in tool in general are as such:

1. All of your movie information and images will be locally stored alongside your movies in a media center friendly format, so they can easily import them. Meaning once you setup your media library once, you will never have to scrape it again, if you lose your database in your media center application for some reason, you only have to re-import your local information from the accompanied files generated by Ember.

2. Full control over your collection and tailor all information according to your taste. Media Center Applications’ built-in scrapers just grab the first available images available for a movie or TV Show. Using Ember, you can download every available information, select images and modify information on a full screen display.
